Part-Time Contract Position

Compensation: from $30/hour, depending on experience

The Role: Ceramics Instructor

The Ceramics Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality ceramics instruction to students of varying skill levels. The successful candidate will bring technical expertise in ceramics, strong communication skills, and a passion for creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

This role supports students in building technical skills, exploring glazing techniques, and developing their creative practice within a vibrant, community-focused arts environment. The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, and brings enthusiasm, creativity, and a passion for teaching to the classroom. Through engaging and innovative programming, they will play a key role in strengthening our ceramics program and enriching the broader arts community.

About the PoMoArts

Established in 1998, PoMoArts, the Port Moody Arts Centre, is a not-for-profit organization that creates art experiences to engage, challenge, and awaken opportunities for connection. We provide art education, exhibitions, and community art experiences in the City of the Arts with various partners and artists each year. We are a busy Arts Centre that builds community through art and are looking to grow our collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging ceramics classes and workshops for students of all levels with a focus on wheel-throwing, hand-building, glaze application, and surface decoration techniques
  • Demonstrate a wide range of ceramic processes and techniques during instruction to enhance hands-on, experiential learning in both classes and workshops
  • Develop detailed lesson plans, workshop outlines, and class materials in advance, ensuring all teaching resources are prepared and delivered on time
  • Provide professional instruction, demonstrations, and constructive feedback to support student learning, skill development, and artistic growth
  • Offer individualized, hands-on guidance to foster creativity, confidence, and technical development
  • Create a supportive, inclusive, and positive learning environment that encourages experimentation and self-expression
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organized studio environment, ensuring the proper care and use of tools, equipment, and materials
  • Follow all studio safety procedures and contribute ideas to improve safety practices where appropriate
  • Adhere to studio policies and procedures to ensure professional and welcoming student experience
  • Communicate respectfully and proactively with students, parents, other instructors, and staff to support smooth program and workshop delivery
  • Arrive prepared, punctual, and professional for all teaching sessions, workshops, and related responsibilities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fine Arts (Ceramics) or equivalent professional experience in the field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching ceramics in a classroom or studio setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage learners in a creative and supportive environment
  • Ability to adapt instruction to different learning styles and student needs
  • Passion for fostering creativity, artistic development, and community engagement
  • Proven ability to follow studio safety procedures and maintain an inclusive learning environment
  • Familiarity with ceramics studio practices, including kiln operation, clay recycling, glaze preparation, and equipment maintenance
  • Flexibility to work varying hours, including evenings and weekends as required
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 kg
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with participants of all ages and diverse social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to successfully pass a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening prior to employment

Assets

  • Experience with digital tools for ceramics, such as ceramic decal design and production
  • Familiarity with alternative firing techniques, including raku, wood firing, or soda firing
  • Membership in professional ceramics organizations or associations
  • Experience participating in artist residency programs
  • Established connections within the regional or national ceramics community
  • Proficiency in an additional spoken language is considered an asset
