Hand-Building & Sculpture

Our Hand-Building & Sculpture program welcomes participants of all ages and experience levels to explore clay through both functional and conceptual approaches. Offered throughout the year, the program allows students to develop skills in techniques such as pinching, coiling, slab construction, and sculptural form while building an understanding of structure, surface, and creative expression.

Instruction is supportive and accessible, making the program approachable for beginners while offering space for more advanced exploration. Through guided projects and open-ended making, participants are encouraged to experiment, think creatively, and gain confidence in working with clay.

Introduction to Hand-Building

July 10 - August 28, 2026

Come learn the basics of hand-building techniques including slab building, coiling, and pinching, and glazing. Discover the limitless possibilities of hand building with clay. You will learn a wide range of techniques and methods to create different forms. You will also learn surface decoration techniques, such as carving, stamping, and applying textures suitable for the different objects you make. Students will produce beginner-friendly projects and develop their own project ideas. This class will also introduce basic glaze and underglaze techniques.

Intermediate & Advanced Hand-Building

July 9 - August 27, 2026

This intermediate and advanced handbuilding class builds on core techniques while encouraging more complex forms and personal expression. Students will refine their skills through methods like double-walled construction, hollow forms, and altering functional pieces. Explore surface design through layered textures, carving, stamping, and underglaze painting, along with glaze experimentation. Instruction includes techniques such as sgraffito, Mishima, and layered underglaze.

Students will be encouraged to develop independent projects, refine their personal style, and experiment with creative expression in clay. This class is ideal for those with prior hand-building experience looking to expand their skills and artistic voice.

Surface Decoration for Experienced Clay Students, Part I

This hands-on course is the first part of a two-part surface decoration series designed for students with prior clay experience who want to deepen and expand their ceramic surface design skills. This summer course focuses on foundational and intermediate decoration techniques, helping students build confidence, technical skills, and creative direction before continuing into Part II in the fall.

Students will explore a wide range of surface decoration methods, including underglaze painting, sgraffito, slip trailing, carving, layering, wax resist, image transfer, stamping and texture work, and gel plate (Gelli plate) monoprinting. The course also includes preparing greenware pieces for surface decoration practice, and students are welcome to bring their own bisque-fired pottery pieces to experiment on.nSuitable for continuing beginners through advanced students, this course provides guided instruction, material exploration, and practical strategies to develop confidence, technique, and personal artistic expression.

Part II in the fall will continue building on these foundations with more advanced surface decoration techniques, expanded glazing combinations, glass fusing, and seasonal, holiday-inspired projects that emphasize concept development, layering, and personal artistic direction. Positioning this as a continuous two-part series creates a clear pathway for returning students and introduces more advanced processes in Part II, such as lustre firing or china paints, as an exciting next step in the series.

Wheel-Throwing

Our Wheel-Throwing program offers a full range of classes, from introductory to advanced levels, for teens and adults. Participants develop essential skills—centering, pulling, shaping, and trimming—while exploring personal expression and form at the wheel. Classes support beginners while offering experienced students opportunities to refine techniques and explore more complex work.

With an emphasis on process, creativity, and confident skill-building, the program provides a thoughtfully supported studio environment where students can experiment, deepen their practice, and connect through clay.

The program covers fundamental concepts, including clay preparation, centring on the wheel, basic hand-building methods, surface finishing, and glazing.

Through hands-on practice and guided instruction, students will develop confidence in working with clay, laying a strong foundation for more advanced techniques. This class offers a supportive and structured introduction to ceramics, making it the perfect starting point for anyone eager to explore the art of pottery.

Continuing Pottery for Beginners

Students will continue developing their skills while exploring new forms beyond cylinders and bowls, refining their techniques for greater precision and consistency. The class will also introduce more thoughtful approaches to form, surface design, and glaze application. It's an ideal next step for anyone eager to grow their foundational skills and start creating more advanced and expressive pottery pieces.

Intermediete & Advanced Wheel-Throwing

This intermediate/advanced ceramics class is designed for experienced artists looking to push their skills further in wheel-throwing techniques. A key focus will be on throwing large-scale vessels and exploring advanced alteration methods to create more dynamic and complex forms. Students will refine their ability to manipulate thrown pieces through cutting, assembling, and reshaping techniques, allowing for greater artistic expression and structural innovation.

The program includes creating multi-section vessels, sculptural alterations, and advanced forms such as lidded jars, teapots, and composite pieces. Design elements like texture, surface decoration, handles, spouts, and galleries will also be explored to enhance both aesthetics and function. This class is ideal for ceramic artists seeking to master complicated forms, experiment with shape transformation, and refine their craftsmanship at an advanced level.

Creative Ceramics & Student Studio

Designed for experienced pottery students, this program supports skill development through both structured and independent practice. In Creative Ceramics Studio, participants work on self-directed projects while exploring a wide range of techniques—wheel-throwing, hand-building, sculptural forms, surface treatments, and more—developed through hands-on practice. Weekly sessions provide time to refine skills, develop personal style, and deepen artistic expression with guidance from our artist instructors.

For ongoing practice, our Student Studio gives currently registered students independent studio time to continue projects, experiment with techniques, and nurture their personal artistic voice. Supervisors are available for guidance, making it a space for focused practice, inspiration, and connection with fellow makers.

Monday Potter's Studio

This intermediate and advanced course is for experienced pottery students ready to develop their skills. Participants work on self-directed projects and explore advanced techniques in wheel-throwing, hand-building, and surface treatments, with guidance from our artist instructors. Students choose Wheel-Throwing or Hand-Building when registering.

Student Studio

Our studio is open four times a week with daytime, evening, and weekend sessions for currently registered adult students. Registration is required for all participants. The studio provides self-directed time to work on personal projects and experiment with techniques. Supervisors are available for guidance. Please note: no refunds are offered, but transfers to other time slots are allowed.
