Ceramic Artist in Residence

Gloria Han
Ceramic Artist-in-Residence 2016-2017

g han CAIR1617This August, Port Moody Arts Centre is happy to welcome Gloria Han as our new Ceramic Artist in Residence (CAIR) for 2016/2017. Taking over from Otto Kamensek and Ray Tse in August, Gloria will become an integral part of life at the arts centre, working in the Ceramic Artist-in-residence's studio and keeping an eye on activity in the other clay studios.

Bio:

Gloria Han is an artist living and working in Coquitlam, BC. She graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, where she concentrated in ceramics and printmaking. Through her practice, Gloria investigates her inherited  histories and identities, referencing traditional Korean ceramic forms and testing the politics of mixing Korean and Western culture. At Emily Carr, she was heavily involved in University governance and advocated for community and student issues such as removing barriers to education for marginalized groups. She loves to work collaboratively and feels that the open studio environment at PMAC will foster an inclusive, and engaged community. .

“I participate in the centuries-old practice of making Korean pottery to root myself in a culture that I inherited rather than inhabit. I think that there is something marvellous about how stories that are specific to my life and mode of expression, find such strong resonance and empathy within others.

It was difficult to find a voice while studying at art school. I don’t have a style or recognizable feature in my work and it can be tricky to find a focus because of this. I hope to develop my creative process so that I can create works that are recognizable as my own before deciding if being immediately recognizable is interesting to me at all.
