Ceramic Artist in Residence

Galleria 16 9 JulyAugust

Please join us for ceramic artist-in-residence, Otto Kamensek's final residency exhibition: Dave, an Unexpected Tale on Thursday, July 23rd at 6pm.

Otto at workOtto has been our ceramics artist-in-residence in the clay studio for two years. He has brought with him creativity and inspiration, engaging with students, staff and visitors as he explains the art of working with clay. He has also been a strong advocate for explaining chronic disease through art. His first exhibition as artist-in-residence explored his interpretation of living with chronic disease, showing visitors what impact it has on day-to-day life.

Dave, an Unexpected Tale: Otto Kamensek

Otto Kamensek completes a second term as the Ceramic Artist in Residence at the Port Moody Arts Centre. Shadowing the footsteps of the surrealists and Frida Kahlo, he put together a sixteen piece sculptural exhibition that directly relates to his health.

This dynamic show delves into themes of pain, fatigue, and the social and psychological aspects of living with a chronic disease like inflammatory arthritis. He will use the work to further explore this realm by creating an animation as an advocacy piece to create better awareness for this misunderstood disease that affects over 4 million Canadians.

Port Moody Arts Centre announces 2013-14 Ceramics Artist in Residence

Port Moody Arts Centre is very pleased to announce that Otto Kamensek has been named their 2013-14 Ceramics Artist in Residence.

Otto is an accomplished ceramic artist, Community Volunteer, and member of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada Consumer Advisory Board. He has spoken nationally and internationally on Art & Health issues to audiences of students, artists, health professionals and the general public. Otto will use this year-long residency to explore and create a body of work related to his health and how it has affected his own body and the world around him. His goal is to create a conversation about what art and health care can offer one another.

In addition to working on his residency projects, Otto will give occasional talks on the subject of Health and Art. He is hopeful that people will stop in to talk about clay or health, listen to or tell stories, laugh, learn, be inspired, or just to say hello.

Port Moody Arts Centre’s ‘Art & Arthritis’ talk by Ceramics Artist in Residence

Otto has spent the past year developing a body of work related to his health. The exhibition, Shards, Bone Deep, is an expression of his relationship with chronic disease. His ceramic works are not what he calls beautiful, but “they were not created for that effect…” says Kamensek, “They’re meant to give the viewer a visceral understanding of what it’s like to live with a chronic illness.” Shards, Bone Deep will be on public exhibition at the Arts Centre until May 8, 2014. His goal is to create a conversation of what art and health care can offer one another (join the conversation @pomoarts #HelpingHands.)

An accomplished ceramic artist, Otto is also an active community volunteer locally in his home town of Burnaby, but also beyond. He is an Emeritus member of the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada’s Consumer Advisory Board and has spoken nationally and internationally on art & health issues to audiences of students, artists, health professionals and the general public.
