Artist Statement

I have had a long standing interest in working in wood as I began as a furniture maker and wooden boat builder.   In recent years I have concentrated on woodturning.  This art form is as frequently guided as much by the nature of the material (colour, grain, texture and figure) as by the artist’s initial design concept.  There is nothing quite like the excitement of stripping away the outer layer of a block of wood to reveal the delicate internal structure of what otherwise might appear to be an ordinary piece of firewood!  Unlike many other forms of woodworking, woodturning often produces a distinctly serendipitous result.

Originally from Ireland, Des Wilson has lived in BC for over 40 years. As a Geologist, he has a longstanding interest in natural materials, which carries through to the ways in which he uses local woods and other found materials for woodturning. “From my garden in Belcarra, I like to turn wood, where I can let the texture, grain, figure and colour determines the appearance of the final form. Unlike the furniture and wooden boats that I have built, turning is an art form which is controlled much more by the character of the medium than by the artisan’s original plan.  There is an amazing variety of high quality wood in British Columbia that can readily be turned green from the tree. Thank you for your interest in my work.”

Des is a long standing member of the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild from whose members he draws inspiration for his work. He also was a Board member of the Port Moody Arts Centre for many years.

Des has exhibited at a number of places including the Lone Cypress Gallery, the Wild Bird Shop, the Port Moody Arts Centre, the Maple Ridge Arts Centre, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam Art Galleries, the North Vancouver Arts Council, and various community craft fairs.
